June 11, 2015 - Custer Wildlife Loop

On the way back from Mammoth Site it poured rain. A bit stumped for things to do, we decided to head back to Rapid City (we were in Hot Springs) by way of the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop.

I'm not sure if you normally see this much wildlife or all the rain and cool weather helped keep them out and about, but we were there in the middle of the afternoon and saw almost every type of critter you could. We even tracked down the burros!

The first buffalo we saw in the park were these males right next to the road.

They were close enough to feel very intimidating even in our
vehicle. We were driving an SUV and it felt like they
could make mincemeat of us if they so chose.

The ever ubiquitous deer.

We saw several prairie dog towns. The babies were adorable.

This deer ran across the road right in front of us.

An antelope and her very tiny baby. She (mama) didn't like the cars
 stopping to gawk.

We managed to run down the so called "Marauding Burros".

Apparently you are supposed to bring snacks to bribe them with.

Even Marauding Burros have cute babies.

The other car was happy to supply the goods! (carrots are recommended)

This one was getting impatient waiting for her handout.
Apparently considering getting in the car and rifling around.
Copious amounts of burro slobber are deposited on my window.
Doing a good "Brighty" imitation.
Apparently the male bison aren't allowed to hang out with the
girls and their babies.

As we drove out of the park, the hills were covered by the
resident herd which is supposed to be one of the largest in the US.
